Careers at The Hinckley School
Our Careers team
At The Hinckley School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality, impartial careers programme that supports all students in making informed decisions about their future pathways, ensuring that students are aware of the full range of progression routes, including A Levels, technical and vocational pathways, and apprenticeships, enabling them to make informed and aspirational choices.
Our careers provision is led by a dedicated team:
Lucy Sturgess – Leader of STEM and Careers
Mrs Sturgess leads the strategic development of careers education across the school. We are working to ensure that our careers programme is fully embedded within the curriculum, aligns with the Gatsby Benchmarks, and supports students in developing essential skills for their future. Mrs Sturgess works closely with staff, employers, and external providers to create meaningful encounters and experiences that inspire and inform students about the world of work.

Careers Link Governor (to be confirmed)
The Careers Link Governor provides strategic oversight of the careers programme. They support the school in ensuring that careers education meets statutory requirements and reflects best practice, including the Gatsby Benchmarks. The governor works with school leaders to review provision, monitor impact, and ensure continuous improvement.
The Gatsby Benchmarks
Our careers programme at The Hinckley School is guided by the Gatsby Benchmarks, which define best practice for careers education in schools and colleges. These benchmarks ensure that all students receive a structured, high-quality careers experience.
The Eight Gatsby Benchmarks
- A Stable Careers Programme
- Learning from Career and Labour Market Information
- Addressing the Needs of Each Pupil
- Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers
- Encounters with Employers and Employees
- Experiences of Workplaces
- Encounters with Further and Higher Education
- Personal Guidance
How we Assess Impact
How We Measure and Assess the Impact of Our Careers Programme
At The Hinckley School, we regularly assess the impact of our careers programme against the Gatsby Benchmarks to ensure high quality and continuous improvement. We use a range of evaluation methods, including the Compass+ tool to benchmark our provision, alongside student voice gathered through the Future Skills Questionnaire, and feedback from staff and parents via surveys. This allows us to review how effectively our programme meets the needs of all learners. We are continuing to develop further approaches to evaluation, enabling us to capture richer insights into student experiences and outcomes. This ongoing cycle of review ensures our careers provision is responsive, regularly updated, aligned with current labour market information, and tailored to support students in making informed and aspirational decisions about their future pathways.
Alumni
At The Hinckley School, we are proud of our students’ journeys beyond school and are developing an exciting Alumni programme to celebrate and connect with former students from both The Hinckley School and John Cleveland Community College.
Our alumni bring a wealth of experience, insight, and inspiration through their own career pathways. By sharing their stories, they can play a vital role in supporting current students as they begin to explore their own futures.
We are keen to build a strong alumni network and would love for former students to get involved in our careers programme. Opportunities may include:
- Sharing your career journey and experiences with students
- Supporting events such as Careers Fair and assemblies
- Assisting with Year 10 mock interviews
- Offering work experience placements within your organisation
- Acting as a role model to inspire the next generation
As we look ahead to celebrating our 400th anniversary in 2029, this is a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with the school community and play a part in shaping its future.
Please watch this space for further updates on our Alumni programme.
If you are interested in getting involved, please contact: Mrs Sturgess – lsturgess@thehinckleyschool.co.uk
